Recently I took up issues with unreliable collections of green waste which a Reading Borough resident contacted me about. I was pleased to get a swift reply from the Council's waste services officer. He recognised that they had failed to deliver consistent collections to the published schedule, due to a 36% increase in green waste which has overwhelmed the available staff. They prioritise Food waste, general waste recycling and lastly green waste which means that green waste has been impacted more than the other streams.
The Borough officer has promised me that they will increase resources and provide an additional 4 days of green waste collections every fortnight from 5th Feb. This should mean more consistency of collection. Some residents will have their collection days changed as a result. Later this year they will also introduce better communications methods to keep residents informed.
I hope that residents will see improvements in reliability as a result of these changes.
